2013 HARVEST AT CHATEAU SAINT NABOR OF RHONE VALLEY

The 2013 HARVEST AT CHATEAU SAINT NABOR OF RHONE VALLEY explained to you:

If I had to use one word to describe this 2013 vintage I would definitely use “patience”. Why is that ?

Due to the weather conditions during the whole year this vintage was 3 weeks late…
Spring basically never happened; we had cold temperatures until end of June, which slowed down the growth of the vines, and all other vegetation.

We also had a lot of rain, more than usual, which kept the temperatures low level. The rain occurred during blooming time; on most grapes it did not have a bad effect, but the Grenache suffered from this weather. Some flowers in bloom got damaged and aborted but the remaining produced healthy berries.
Summer went very well, high temperatures during the whole season, not a lot of rain, allowed the grapes to ripen in a healthy environment. Even though the season was great, it did not help to speed up the ripening process.

We knew we would have a late harvest, the first estimate from grape sampling projected the harvest date for the 4th of September. Finally we started harvest on September 9, first grape to enter the cellar: Viognier !
Great quality juice, intense aromas, all we could ask for !

Right after the Viognier we harvested the Chardonnay, here also great quality grapes but with a lower yield than usual.

On September 20th we harvested the first block of Grenache. These grapes will be used for our light rosé, the Gris de Nabor.

Finally the red grapes start to be ready but not all of them, so we started to harvest some blocks of Syrah, here we are looking at a great amount of color and very fruity aromas.

Harvest 2012 ended October 2nd, this year most of the red grapes will have to wait after this date to be fully ripe !

Today I can say “so far, so good”, we had great weather in September that allowed the grapes to continue to ripen. Every trip to the vineyard keeps us confident on the quality of the grapes, the only difference is that it is later than I have ever seen … But when we ask our dad he tells us that over 30 years ago harvest was around that time of the year !
